For Gonzo

A few nights ago, we caught Jane's Journey at the IFC. It's a documentary on Jane Goodall released by First Run Features (HOLLER). On the way home that night, I felt so at peace that I sat without realizing the subway was going extremely slow due to construction work. While everybody sat there moaning and groaning, I thought about Jane's amazing spirit, a level I wish to achieve within myself someday.

Sometimes I forget that happiness is a mindset and not a possession. I remember there's this quote from the pilot of Freak and Geeks. When Lindsay gets in trouble, she is punished by having to chaperone at the homecoming. Mr. Rosso says to her, "Look, I know you're not happy about this but don't make me look like a bad guy here. If the worst thing in your life is somebody makes you go to a dance, then I'd say you have a pretty good life."

Gonzalo, one of my closest friends, is returning back to Spain tomorrow evening. Rae had just moved out of NYC three months ago and Belgie went back to Portland in May. Little by little, my small circle of friends are adventuring off. Photographs of pastimes are now replaced by postcards and letters. It's hard saying goodbye so it's best not to say them at all. Gonzo made dinner for us last night and it was very lovely. When we departed, we just hugged and said "See you soon!"
